THE STORY
Sinharaja Forest Reserve meaning ‘Lion Kingdom’ is the best known Rain Forest in the country and has been identified as an important biodiversity hotspot.
In December 1988, the Sinharaja Biosphere Reserve became Sri Lanka’s first natural site to be added to UNESCO World Heritage list.
Sinharaja is home to a brightly coloured bird called the blue magpie, and found exclusively in Sri Lanka. The blue magpie is classified as being vulnerable to extinction due to the fragmentation and destruction of its habitat.

The bird life of Sri Lanka is very rich for its size, and about 496 species have been recorded. In addition to the many resident birds, a considerable number of migratory species winter in the country to escape their northern breeding grounds.
